About the role

‍

Matter is hiring a senior engineer to help build and scale the backend services, data systems, and AI infrastructure that power our product experience. This role has meaningful ownership of the AI systems that support our user-facing chat experience.

‍

You will work across infrastructure, product-facing APIs, data workflows, AI evaluation, and operational systems. The right person is excited by the intersection of backend engineering, structured data, reliability, and AI product quality.

Responsibilities

‍

In this role you will:

‍

  • Ship features across the entire backend stack, from infrastructure to product endpoints
  • Evolve our chat harness so we can quickly and safely experiment with AI behavior in response to product needs
  • Improve evaluations and other quality-control measures to benchmark utility and accuracy of chat for our users
  • Optimize AI/ML usage for speed, cost, and reliability
  • Establish and follow best practices for scalability, security, testing, monitoring, alerting, and AI systems operations
  • Partner closely with product, your engineering teammates, and leadership to translate product goals into reliable technical systems

Qualifications

‍

You'll likely be a strong fit if you have:

‍

  • 4+ years of experience working on a large-scale backend system
  • Production experience in TypeScript, Python or Go (Matter uses TypeScript)
  • Strong SQL and data skills
  • Familiarity with AWS or GCP, experience with infrastructure-as-code a plus
  • Experience building reliable, observable, and maintainable production systems
  • Proactive communication in a fully remote environment
  • Strong ownership and a bias for action

The ideal candidate will also have experience:

‍

  • Developing a chat-based system that can answer questions reliably and accurately
  • Building an internal data-analysis chatbot, AI analyst, support copilot, search/Q&A tool, or similar product
  • Working with LLMs, evals, prompt/version management, observability, cost optimization, or AI safety practices
  • Working on consumer, health, wellness, productivity, or other trust-sensitive products

  • Base salary range: $180,000–$220,000, depending on experience and skills
